About this deal
Considering that the CoolScan cannot be bought new, and costs approx. twice what I paid for the Reflecta, brand new with warranty, I think the Nikons are poor value. Yes, they're very good, but the prices are inflated, and in fact the scanners you can still buy today deliver a lot better quality than many give them credit for. I have the Opticfilm 120 – having seen my Nikon Coolscan 9000 ED die in front of me. Having used Silverfast on the Nikon – well TRIED to use Silverfast on the Nikon – I knew that would be the WORST part of the whole experience. I use Vuescan with the Opticfilm 120 and can say it is both easy to use and delivers images as good as you note here – and better than the Nikon in most cases. It is in fact easier to use than the Nikon, as the film holders are significantly better designed and the batch scanning works much better than on the Nikon (although not as well as Nikonscan 4.0 used to be on the Nikon). I rate this as the best scanner I have used to date and I rate Vuescan as the best software to drive it. I haven’t even opened the Silverfast CD (yes! a CD-ROM) that came with the scanner. I scanned over 26,000 frames in 35mm and MF on the Nikon and have just reached 1,000 on the 120 – so I think I have worked it out. I have an Epson V500 Perfection Photo scanner. It easily handles slides, negatives, and medium format film. It can do reflective as well as transparent scanning.
Great news – the new Plustek 120 Pro is now available. If it’s as good for MF as their 8100/8200 line is for 35mm, then I’d say we have a great new options for scanning negatives around:Pacific Image PrimeFilm XA scanner controls explained. Selecting frames and operating film transport on PrimeFilm XA. Setup. Flatbeds are cumbersome; DSLR rigs are painful. Dedicated scanners like XA are reasonably easy to move around and require nothing other than a power source and a laptop nearby. Sample scan file.
Pacific Image Electronics has developed a new 35mm scanner called PowerFilm. The specs look very interesting, as it can batch process 10 stripes 35mm film containing 6 frames and it uses its own software instead of SilverFast. It features 3 pass scanning for better dynamic range and a resolution of ca. 4000 dpi resulting in 24MP 16 bit tif.I’d recommend either of these scanners, although the Plustek is cheaper. The resolution difference may matter, and the Reflecta is a bit faster than the Plustek
Longitudinal chromatic aberrations or LoCAs are purple and green fringing seen in the out of focus areas in front of and behind the focus point of an image.LoCAs are common, especially with fast lenses, so chances almost all of your lenses have at least a trace, you just never noticed. The problem is that LoCAs are extremely difficult to correct with complex designs using special glass to fully correct the aberration. Stephen launched Kosmo Foto in November 2017, shortly after Analog.Cafe became a thing. But in contrast to Analog.Cafe’s slow readership growth as I searched for my role in the film community , Stephen’s film exploded with 10,000 rolls sold in the first nine months since the announcement. Multiple Image Enhancement Options: The PrimeFilm XE scanner offers various image enhancement features to improve the quality of scanned images. It includes features like automatic color restoration, dust and scratch removal, and exposure correction, allowing users to enhance the appearance of their digital images with ease.
How much detail needs to be captured? Pay attention to the reported resolution the scanner is capable of capturing. You may see “hardware” and “optical” resolution. Optical is the more important value to consider as it does not involve any interpolation algorithms. What Are the Best Film Scanners for Photographers? If functionality, high-quality scans, and affordability are your priorities, then it’s hard to go wrong with the Epson Perfection V600.
