About this deal

Some of the built-in effects are a little strong for my tastes, but there are plenty of options to get your creative juices flowing. I’m particularly fond of the blue filter effect, which evokes the look of old Technicolour film, and the double exposure is also lots of fun to use.

The app does a few different things: It prints images from your phone, provides remote controls for the camera, and transfers photos from the camera to your phone for easier social shares. Not everything works flawlessly—because the live feed transmits over Bluetooth, not Wi-Fi, the view is slightly choppy, for example. The live view takes up only a small portion of your phone's screen too, so it can be difficult to use effectively. Additionally, none of the Evo's creative filters or colors are available when you use the remote camera controls—it's a workable, but underwhelming, implementation.Pull the lever and print images immediately, whether you have just taken the shot, or you are printing images from your smartphone. With built-in Bluetooth, the mini Evo can transfer images in seconds for you to have your memories in the world as an iconic credit-card-sized print. Bluetooth pairing to your smartphone is just as convenient, with Fuji's Mini Evo app finding the camera right away and putting useful functions like remote shutter (with live view), direct printing and image sharing on the homescreen. It's odd that you're only able to share pictures from camera to phone if they've been printed first, though. Image quality

The wide-angle lens is good enough for shots of one or two people together—its 28mm angle is just a little narrower than the main lens on most smartphones. It's fairly bright too, with a fixed f/2 aperture, but the Evo still relies on its built-in flash for photos in typical home lighting. The flash is an LED, like the one on smartphones, but offers a bit of soft diffusion and better reach than bare smartphone lenses because of its fresnel surface finish. Only printed photos and images in your print history can be transferred. Up to 50 photos are saved in your print history so be sure to transfer your shots over regularly to keep them on your phone. What memory card does the instax mini Evo take? The Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo camera is an interesting hybrid product for a fair price that seeks to expand on the self-imposed limitations of an instant print camera that only outputs credit card sized prints. The front of the camera is rather sparse, with a power switch, shutter button and small selfie mirror surrounding the lens barrel, which can be twisted to cycle between lens modes. An instant camera for the 21st century, the Mini Evo allows you to preview your shots before you take them, tweak the exposure, add filters and flash, then print and share your shots to social media. Paired with its companion app, it can even be used to print off your smartphone pictures as well.

As well as an image capture device, the Fujifilm Instax Mini Evo can also act as a standalone mini printer, connectable to our smartphones via Bluetooth, meaning that photos transmitted from our phone’s camera roll can be output as hard copies. It also means that shots can be transferred the other way from the Mini Evo to our smartphone for sharing on social media or with friends and family. Truly its maker seems to be attempting to cover all bases and user requests with this one. It’s not without its limitations: it’s unapologetically an instant camera first so if you primarily want to shoot digital images, you’ll be better served by your smartphone. Fujifilm’s decision to limit the app’s shareable images to those you’ve physically printed is also a real annoyance. The Evo (left) draws its inspiration from classic camera designs like the Leica M11 (right) (Photo: Jim Fisher) It’s fully automatic in operation and is a simple point-and-shoot affair, but it does offer the ability to tweak your exposure compensation, set your autofocus point, toggle the flash control, set a self timer and add a range of creative effects. With this instax camera, you don’t have to choose between the joys of the digital age or the pleasure of analogue design. The mini Evo combines both into a hybrid digital camera that encompasses your passions.
