How to Read a Tree: The Sunday Times Bestseller
About this deal
Phylogenetic trees are really very similar, but for species rather than individuals within a family. This book is highly recommended not just for tree lovers, but nature lovers who want to lose themselves in the scent and sights of the physical world. His down-to-earth voice and consummate respect for the topic puts this among the best nature writers and I’ve read many. I left this book wishing I could walk through a forest with Tristan Gooley and absorb his passion and love for this majestic part of nature. Gooley drops learning as lighty as blossom falls in spring.’ John Lewis-Stempel, author of The Wood
The tree is built iteratively from the root to the the leaves thanks to the training set. Indeed, the dataset is split into two : the training set that the Decision Tree is using to train itself and the testing set used to measure the performance of the Decision Tree once built by comparing its predictions to the real values. It will try all the possible boundaries along all the features, i.e. all the axes petal width and sepal width. That was a simple example using independent events (each toss of a coin is independent of the previous toss), but tree diagrams are really wonderful for figuring out dependent events (where an event depends on what happens in the previous event) like this example:
All of this is very difficult and many algorithms are available, especially since genomic data itself is large, complex (different kinds of genomic data is available - RNA, DNA, Methylated DNA etc) and also based on what we know of the function of the genes (difference in functional gene is a more significant difference than the difference in non-functional genes). It is really important to read from your child’s reading book (or another book at the right level) every day. It can seem like a struggle or a chore if your child is unenthusiastic, but try and find the time – your child’s reading skills will blossom for it.
