Sealers took 150,000 northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus) from the Farallons between 1810 and 1813, followed by Russian fur hunters who lived on the Farallons and extirpated the pinnipeds from the islands. In 1996 West End Island became the fourth American northern fur seal rookery when a pup was born. The recolonizers bore tags from San Miguel Island in the Channel Islands, which had been itself recolonized in 1968. [42] By 2006, nearly 100 pups were born. [43] The fur seals are aggressive and have displaced larger sea lions from their territory. The high count for 2011 was 476 individuals, a 69 percent increase from the year before. [44] By 2016, the pup count alone was 1,126, reflecting a 21% average (but highly variable) annual increase in new pups over the 21 years since recolonization. If the South Farallon Islands population reaches its estimated historical size of 100,000 individuals, it could account for approximately one-fifth of the world's northern fur seal population. [45] After Alta California was ceded by Mexico to the United States in 1848 with the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo, the islands' environment became linked to the growth of the city of San Francisco. Beginning in 1853, a lighthouse was constructed on SEFI. As the city grew, the seabird colonies came under severe threat as eggs were collected in the millions for San Francisco markets. The trade, which in its heyday could yield 500,000 eggs a month, was the source of conflict between the egg-collecting companies and the lighthouse keepers. This conflict turned violent in a confrontation between rival companies in 1863. The clash between two rival companies, known as the Egg War, left two men dead and marked the end of private companies on the islands, although the lighthouse keepers continued egging. A total of 30 Tasmanian devil skulls were examined from the collection of the Australian Museum using photography and veterinary dental radiographic equipment at the Taronga Zoo, both located in Sydney, Australia. Of these specimens, 28 were intact skulls containing entire maxillae and mandibles and were thus included in this analysis. Specimens were cataloged by the museum collection with individual identification numbers, as well as the date of recovery and sex of the animal, if known. None of the specimens had the precise age of the animal recorded.

Twenty-two of the specimens were recovered in the year 1866, with an additional five having been recovered after that date and one with an unknown recovery date. The average skull length and width were 12.3 (±1.0) and 9.7 (±0.9) respectively, with a mean skull index of 79.2 (±4.9). No significant difference was identified when the skull measurements were assessed specifically among the known and suspected females compared to the rest of the study population (skull length 11.9 ± 0.5 p = 0.302, skull width 9.6 ± 0.4 p = 0.701, skull index 80.7 ± 6.5 p = 0.371). The maxillae and mandibles were visually inspected and photographed in a standardized manner, both articulated and separately, across eleven images capturing the frontal, lateral, and occlusal planes of view, specifically from the ventral aspect of the maxilla and dorsal aspect of the mandibles. When notable pathology was identified, such as overt crown fracture, focally severe recession of the alveolar bone, or marked dental malocclusion, additional targeted photographs were obtained. Fossil hunting is great fun, but needs a lot of patience. The best place to look for fossils is always along beaches rather than in cliffs. Keep well away from the base of cliffs and be careful not to get cut off by rising tides. This means that over millions of years, vast numbers of shark teeth have sunk to the bottom of ancient oceans, been buried by sediments and fossilised.
